The pro surfer from Hawaii, Mikala Jones passed away on 9th July 2023. The whole world especially the surfing community has been in complete despair and devastated after hearing the heartbreaking news. His legacy of capturing insane moments inside the barrel-breaking waves is well known to his fans, and he will always be remembered for it.
The tragic loss occurred when the fin of his surfboard sliced an artery in his leg with a 4-inch deep cut while surfing in Indonesia’s Mentawai Islands. Loss of blood was reported as the cause of death by medical staff. Those who knew him and loved him, have lost an essential part of themselves. A floating memorial in the water, commonly known as paddle out has been organized for Mikala Jones’s memorial at Bali.

At just the age of 44, Mikala Jones had to say goodbye to this transient world. And the whole world is mourning after one of the biggest losses in history. What is more heart ranching is, in one of the last social media posts of Jones, he posted his video standing on a surfboard and getting covered by a cloud of waves, on which he wrote, “Time To Live.” Jones always said that besides his children and wife, surfing is all he needs. This is the legacy that will be celebrated in his paddle out.
According to the Surfer, the paddle out has been planned to take place at Cannugu Beach, Bali. this is the memorial destination where Jones resided during his stay in Indonesia. Jones’s family has invited the guests to gather at Times Beach Warung at 4 pm, On Monday, 17th July 2023, to pay their respects to Jones. The invitation states, “The family would like to invite you to join in paying your respects at one or all of the following.”
The cremation will be taking place in Bali on 15th July at the Kerta Semadi Mumbul Krematorium. Jones’s family sent the invitation for the paddle out through social media. This unfortunate incident not only took his family by shock, but the surfers, the Resort owner, and his nephew were startled to see this. This was certainly an unpredicted accident, although his nephew and other surfers were present at the beach during this time and despite their hardest attempts to revive him, Jones did not respond.

People on the beach impotently exerted themselves
Mikala Jones’s nephew, Keala Ashton was surfing with him, said he saw a big 8 feet wave coming and Jones thought he would make it but unfortunately he could not. Later on Ashton’s Instagram, he wrote, “I tried my absolute best to do everything I could and I’m sorry it wasn’t enough.” The resort owner, Aimar Abilleira also tried to help Jones as much as he could. In an interview with The New York Times, Aimar said, “We stayed one hour trying to make him alive.” All this happened so suddenly that no one is able to get over it, everyone put it all on the line, but it was too late.

Mikala Jones was certainly one of the greatest surfers of all time along with his brilliant photography and video shooting. He has given something extraordinary to the world with his surfing. And in return, the fans have poured their heart out to express their condolence and solace to the family. Maybe the goodbye was unprepared but Jones’s legacy will be eternal to the world.
