As Florence gears up for the 2024 WSL Championship, the popular surfer recently took a moment to express his admiration for big-wave surfing on social media and his plans to reduce its hazards.
While John John Florence has made his career and name in pipe surfing, he believes big-wave surfers are the real deal. The hazards of this surfing discipline are well known; yet, passionate surfers continue to head into the massive waves aboard their “guns”. As Florence aims to contribute to developing new equipment for big-wave surfers, he nods his hat toward these brave hearts with a touching post.

In his latest Instagram post, Florence commended big-wave surfing as being the thrilling sport that it is. “Big wave surfing is a crazy thing in my mind“, acknowledged Florence from the get-go. The Hawaii-born surfer further said, “I have so much respect for the surfers who chase these waves year round and dedicate their lives to this part of surfing.” He also said that the amount of transformation the sport has gone through over the past decade is incredible and in the accompanying video, Florence can be heard being eager to see how things unfold in the coming years as well.

“I can’t wait to see what happens in the next ten years, ” says Florence as a group of big-wave surfers can be seen getting a total wipeout. He also hailed the lifeguards who undertake their job responsibilities every day without hesitation. And he has something in his mind to mitigate the safety issues related to the sport.
As part of his new project, Florence and his brand Florence Marine X have come up with the Modular Impact Springsuit that aims to reduce impacts from wipeouts while ensuring free movement. While the new suit’s price is set at a jaw-dropping $800, it waits to be seen how extensively it is adopted by big-wave surfers. Especially during a time when near-fatal accidents on the waves are coming to the fore frequently.

Waves continue to subdue surfers
Every surfing fan knows perfectly well that the hope of dominating the waves is a sweet lie they’ve created for themselves in order to continue doing what they love. Only days ago, a horrified community learned about Eimeo Czermak’s life-threatening injury that he suffered while practicing his moves on the surfboard. The giant waves did not even spare the best in the sport.

Recently, ace surfer Kai Lenny suffered a dangerous wipeout at the Pipelines. Lenny later said that by god’s grace, he was wearing a helmet for the first time on that occasion. That might have been the only factor that he is still alive. This succinctly reiterates the necessity of proper gear in the sport of surfing.
