South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula has just been hit with some tragic news. A 46-year-old surfer from Elliston went missing from about 30-50 meters ashore from the beach. Rescuers have scoured the waters and have come up with a rather disturbing update. The surfer was most likely attacked by a shark, and now the whole beach area is looming in its fear.
The 46-year-old man from Elliston, whose identity has not been disclosed, was surfing at Walkers Rock Beach at the Great Australian Bight. After recovery of his surfboard, and confirmation from multiple eye-witnesses, it is likely that the man was killed by a Great White Shark.

At around 10 am, Police and State Emergency Services were called to the spot of the incident, which is about 4.34 miles away from Elliston, a small coastal town in the state of South Australia. The man, a well-known person in the region, has been missing for quite some time now, and no traces of him have been found since.
More than six boats and multiple jet skis were all searching deep into the waters to no avail. At the time of the incident, there were as many as sixteen people present in the vicinity, who all claimed that the man was attacked by a shark. Knowing the large population of one species there, it is probably the Great White Shark.

Addressing the shock and dismay prevailing in the region, Mr. Trevelyn Smith, the SES manager, told ABC News, “We’ve got a missing person, they’ve already got the surfboard … we’re just looking for anything that relates to [that] person”. Owing to the multiple witnesses and the nature of the evidence found so far, Mr. Smith also strongly believes it is a Great White attack.
Great Whites have frightened the local area for years
Elliston is a small town that’s 403 miles south of the state capital Adelaide. The Walkers Beach is in an even more remote location and is haunted by sharks. The Great Australian Bight is notorious for its presence of Great White Sharks. Even Google Maps marks the area just south of Walkers Rock Beach as a ‘shark breeding ground’. Great White Sharks, like Tiger Sharks, attack surfers in shallow waters.

While shark attacks have been a common threat to surfers, more so in many other Australian states, the small town of Elliston is still not new to such incidents. 17-year-old Jevan Wright was also killed by a shark there in 2000. As for this well-known 46-year-old man, the search for his body is still on.
