Whether it is the Vans surfing contest or the Billabong Pipeline Pro, the surfing universe invites everyone to the oceanic arena. However, these competitions have two basic divisions – the men’s category and the women’s category. Well, that’s about to change now. The world’s most prestigious surfing event, the Eddie, has returned with an incredible theme. This year, the Eddie Aikau Big Wave event invited women surfers to compete alongside the men. Moreover, fans commended the organizers for bringing forth a unique idea.

Recently, NBC shared the news of the Hawaiian event with the surfing fraternity through its social media handle. Fans and surfing enthusiasts flocked to the comment section to express their delight. 

Fans appreciated the Eddie’s new theme

The Eddie is a one-day contest that is organized every year in Waimea Bay on Oahu’s north shore. The tournament was first piloted in the year 1984 and has been running for the last 39 years successfully. This year, the event took all the plaudits for shaking things up

NBC shared the news of the Eddie’s unique theme on their Facebook handle, writing, “This year, female surfers will be competing alongside the men for the first time in the 39-year history of The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational”.

Praising the idea, fans brimmed the comment section. They wrote:

Moreover, some fans were intrigued by why it took so long for Aikau to come up with such an interesting theme.

On Sunday, Honolulu-based lifeguard, Luke Shaphardson won ‘the Eddie’ title for the year 2023 by knocking down the defending champion, John John Florence.
