Over the years, the sport of surfing has expanded its roots to new horizons. From oceans and surf ranches to water stimulators and rivers, one can find a surfer in any water body. But, recently, a surfer took the concept to a whole new level by paddling his way across the canal. Now, surfing in a stagnant water body may sound atypical, but the young surfer thinks otherwise. 

Recently, a video of a man surfing across the canal went viral and stunned the internet. In the video, a man can be seen jogging towards a canal in the middle of the city, while carrying a surfboard. He throws the board into the water, leaps on it, and quickly paddles the entire distance. Let’s take a look at what netizens have to say about the surfer’s incredible feat.

Netizens went gaga over the surfer’s commendable canal-crossing feat

Many people choose the traditional path to commute from one place to the other. However, a few prefer unique yet creative modes of transportation. Likewise, the man in the viral video belongs to the group of those select few, as he chose to cross the canal with the help of his surfboard. Interestingly, he covered the space between both shores at an unbelievably fast speed, which astounded the social media cult. 

The Surfing fan page, People Are Awesome, shares videos of surfing fanatics performing extraordinary prompts, through its Twitter handle. On a similar note, the fan page recently posted a video of the canal surfing spree with the caption, “This is Amazing”. Following this, fans and many from the surfing fraternity brimmed the comment section to the hilt. 

One fan even compared the man’s surfing technique with Robert Frost’s poem and penned, “The Road not Taken“. Another reiterated the caption and wrote, “People are AWESOME“.

It’s not every time that surfers get appreciated for their creative prompts. Sometimes, some surfers have to face the fatal consequences of their unique attempts. Like last year in August, two tourists in Venice paddled across the grand canals of the city and later, had to face the wrath of the locals.

Surfing across grand canals cost tourists hefty ramifications

In August 2022, a pair of tourists were spotted surfing on their motorized foil surfboards along the canals of Venice. While Venice canals allow tourists to travel through other water transportation facilities, the use of surfboards is strictly prohibited. However, oblivious to this fact, the tourists paddled their way through the stream. Following this, the mayor of Venice launched a hunt for the offenders.

Disappointed with the act, the mayor tweeted, “a mockery of the city“. He even offered a dinner treat to anyone who could help the police locate the surfers. After several hours of the search operation, the police authorities located the tourists and confiscated their surfboards. The duo had to pay 1,500 euros. Surfing in grand canals and flaunting canal surfing skills on the local canals of the city, are completely different scenarios. Nevertheless, the man in the recent viral video took all the brownie points through his commendable prowess, don’t you agree?
