Griffin Colapinto qualifies for the big games next year. The 24-year-old CT surfer who beat the Surfing legend, Kelly Slater in the 2023 Corona Open’s first round will now represent Team USA in Teahupo’o next year. The World Surf League (WSL) announced the player’s qualification after his staunch performance throughout the 2023 Corona Open.

The WSL qualifying Corona Open event is currently going on in J-Bay, located in the south end of South Africa this year. The ongoing event began on July 13 and has already picked some staunch surfers to qualify for the Olympics in 2024. Yesterday, WSL announced a few qualified surfers through this CT event on social media.

Griffin Colapinto qualifies for the big game

On July 19, the WSL announced Griffin Colapinto’s provisional qualification for the Olympics 2024 through Instagram. The league, in collaboration with the surfer, posted a poster of Griffin Colapinto qualifying for the USA team. The WSL also captioned the post, stating, “Congratulations, @griffin_cola! You have provisionally qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. We can’t wait to watch you compete for the United States next year at Teahupo’o. #QualificationSeason2023”

While talking about the qualification, Colapinto revealed that his goals for this year were to win three CT events, qualify for the Olympics, and strike gold. And after winning the 1 CT event and getting his ticket for the big games, the only goal left for the surfer is to win the world title. The athlete stoked about achieving his dreams, stated, “It’s so cool to put it down on paper and feel it all come to life.”

Griffin Colapinto finished the Corona League in its 16th elimination round by securing the second position in the event. Besides Colapinto, Brazilian Surfer Filipe Toledo, who won the 2023 Corona Championship, has also qualified for the Olympics in 2024. The WSL revealed the qualifications of both talented surfers on Instagram yesterday. Many fans that are happy for Colapinto to join the US team congratulated the surfer in the comments section.

Fans congratulate Colapinto’s achievement

Griffin Colapinto is the first surfer to practically join the US men’s surfing team for the 2024 Olympics. The 24-year-old is guaranteed to be one of the top-tier position holders amongst the US surfers participating in the WSL this year. Many fans are happy for the surfer to represent the USA and congratulated him under the WSL’s Instagram post. As one fan wrote, USA my country yes.” While one fan congratulating the surfer wrote “Congratulations Griffo. One fan excited for Colapinto’s Olympic journey penned down a comment, “so stoked for you.” Moreover, a fan stating the surfer deserves the win wrote, “Congratulations, and so well deserved.” One fan who wants Colapinto to strike gold at the games stated, “Griff for the Gold”

Besides Griffin, the US team will also most likely be joined by the talented surfer John John Florence. And With Colapinto’s talent and Florence’s experience, the USA Men’s surfing team will truly exhibit a staunch performance in Paris next year.
