Surfer Sarah Almagro overcame immense physical challenges. At 18, she had to have both her hands and feet amputated when she contracted meningococcal meningitis. Despite this setback, she got back on the turf and recently accomplished an unbelievable feat in the world of surfing. A mere three years after the incident that changed her life, Sarah participated in the World Para Surfing Championships.

The Championship was held in the United States, in which she achieved second place. Her incredible journey serves as a testament to the potential of the human spirit. Sarah Almagro conquers surfing championships

Sarah Almagro showcased her skills at the Open LPA Surf City 2023 championship, which was held in Gran Canaria. Reflecting on her victory, she expressed, “I had four prosthesis and a silver around my neck. It is something that I would never have imagined after everything that happened. People should never throw in the towel,” as reported by Reuters. Adaptive surfing offers a unique platform for individuals to demonstrate their abilities. Rejecting categorization, she asserted, “I don’t like people being categorized. We are people. I need help. I am not worth less than you.”

From a young age, the 23-year-old from Malaga, Spain, developed a passion for surfing. The Spanish surfer had a liking for surfing since she was 5 years old. Juggling surfing, law studies, and motivational speaking, Almagro eagerly anticipates surfing’s inclusion in the 2028 Games despite its absence from the upcoming Paris Paralympics. She has received support from her parents in this journey. 

Parents’ relentless efforts and foundation support amputee surfer

In a revealing interview with Orato in August 2022, it was disclosed that Sarah Almagro’s parents tirelessly raised funds for her prosthetics, enabling her to maintain the active and athletic lifestyle she had prior to her amputations. Recognizing the inadequacy of government-provided prostheses, they embarked on a mission to advocate for not only Sarah but also all individuals in need of such devices.

Sarah’s hand prosthetics alone amount to an astonishing $81,500 USD each, with her feet prosthetics costing $204,000 USD, requiring a substantial estimated investment of 2.5 million euros throughout her life. In response, her parents founded the Somos Tu Ola Foundation, advocating for improved prosthetic quality and meningitis vaccine inclusion.
