Surfing pioneer Kelly Slater’s extraordinary career is what makes him the greatest surfer of all time. He holds a whopping record of 11 World Surf League triumphs in addition to his 56 Championship Tour wins. However, his finesse isn’t solely responsible for his accomplishments- the athlete cultivates a highly organized and aware lifestyle that has kept him going even at 50. 

According to a recent post by NBC Olympics on Twitter, the remarkable athlete has already envisioned his performance at the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games to be held in Paris. Moreover, he made a bold statement under-toning his retirement from the sport.

Kelly Slater has high hopes for the 2024 Olympics

As per the tweet, the American athlete gave us a glimpse of his staggering confidence and physical prowess by making bold claims about competing at the next games. He said, “I feel like I have a good shot at potentially winning a medal or gold medal…”

Furthermore, he added, “If that were the case, I will drop the mic and quit right then.” Slater debuted as a professional surfer in the 1990s and has since been associated with the field for over two decades. The caption of the post read, “At age 50, the surfing GOAT @kellyslater has @Paris2024 on his mind.”

Even though the surfing sphere might expect the legend to end his mighty career soon, the athlete once revealed that he is not gonna stop even at the age of 90, irrespective of feeling old. 

Retirement is a distant story for Slater

In a 2016 interview with Stab Mag, the Hall of Famer once got candid about his retirement plans. Surprisingly, he was acclaimed as the youngest (20) as well as the oldest (39) surfing champion. Thus, he stated, “I’m not retiring. I have every intention of being 90 and surfing Hawaii’s Backdoor Pipeline.”

However, the icon did confess to feeling “pretty old.” Clarifying the statement, he said, “Not mentally, just in my body.” He also mentioned that he had been working out to recover from his injuries and to maintain a robust physique for the tours. 

The 50-year-old athlete, is also an entrepreneur and an environmentalist. His company, Kelly Slater Wave Co. is a futuristic initiative. It lays the foundation for artificial settings created for an enhanced surfing experience. Evidently, his passion for surfing is a lifelong story.
