The surfing world fell into a deafening silence when the news of the passing of legendary surfer Mikala Jones was released. This surfing icon has made a great contribution to the sport and has created a lot of memorable artwork during his journey.
The sudden and unfortunate passing of surfer, photographer, and artist Mikala Jones has deeply shaken the surfing world. Jones was infinitely loved by several surfing fans and indie artists across the world. Saddened by his untimely demise, a journalist has penned a heartfelt and emotional memoir for Jones.
The surfing legend who traveled from Hawaii to Indonesia

Mikala Jones was a down-to-earth person who was known for things more than just surfing. Jones was famous for his photographs taken from inside the barrel formation of the ocean waves when he surfed inside them. The Inertia journalist Matt George, was deeply saddened by the unfortunate passing of Jones. Jones was 44 years old and full of life. The surfer breathed a sense of newness in almost everything he touched.

Among the many things Jones was known for, his love for Indonesia stood out the most. Jones had permanently moved to Indonesia from his home in Hawaii. Paying homage to the now-gone surfer, George penned one of the most beautiful pieces written about surfing or surfers. His essay titled, “Mikala Jones: Remembering the Man, the Surfer, and His Love for Indonesia,” has been shared on the Instagram handle of The Inertia.

One of the lines of his essays read, “Mikala beheld moments that even a mystic would crave. He put time in a bottle. Our time.” The passion of the great surfer has been aptly captured in the essay. Even in his final moments, Mikala Jones was out in the ocean, doing what he loved most: surfing.
Surfing icon on his final adventure
Jones had set out on another adventure in the ocean on the morning of 23rd July 2023. He was on a trip to the Mentawai Islands when he got into a surfing accident. According to Jones’ father, the fin of his surfboard cut his femoral artery. Jones was immediately taken to the Mentawai Hospital, but alas, the surfer passed away at the hospital. Jones is survived by his wife, Alex O’Loughlin, and his three kids.

The surfing artist will forever be known for his passion for the sport and his extremely picturesque photographs. Taking the news of his sudden demise is definitely a bitter pill to swallow.
