For athletes going through tough times, families often have their backs. In fact, families often constitute some of their strongest support systems. For instance, champion surfer Laird Hamilton once revealed how his mother was his biggest supporter. While she worked hard to support him, Hamilton talked about her and the rest of his family in a documentary series.

In a candid interview with Graham Bensinger, Laird Hamilton talked about his parents, his biological father, and his stepfather. While he dived deeper into his family history, the surfer spoke about his mother’s role in bringing him up.

Laird Hamilton appreciated his mother’s support

Growing up, the surfer unfortunately never had his biological father by his side. He revealed that he left when the surfer was quite young, and never returned. Although he later met him once out of curiosity, Hamilton struggled without a father figure. Throughout this, his mother was a strong figure who supported the family. The surfer expressed his gratitude, remembering how he had often disappointed her.

He revealed, “my mom worked, you know, 16-hour days, six days a week, and somehow managed to feed us and clothe us”. The surfer was full of gratitude for his mother, who worked hard to support his dreams.

For Laird Hamilton, his mother was his biggest influence. She taught him the values of forgiveness and gratitude. While he decided not to pursue higher education, his mother supported him. He knew that he had disappointed his mother in many ways. However, she always had his back.

Relationship with his stepfather

While he was grateful to his mother, Laird Hamilton mentioned his tumultuous relationship with his stepfather. Only 14 years senior, the surfer’s stepfather, and he shared a brotherly connection which would often lead to fights.

However, the surfer stated that with time and age, the choppy waters had calmed down. He was able to come to terms with his stepfather, and vice versa. Currently, Hamilton himself is a father of 3 children and lives with his partner Gabrielle Reece.
