The sport of surfing is not only well-regarded for its commendable prompts but is also known for its dangerous wipeouts. And, to ensure more safety while surfing, the concept of surf leashes is now adopted widely. However, amidst the wide popularity of surfing cords, a Californian surfer got condemned by surfing fanatics for promoting the non-usage of surf leashes.

Brent Flaaten is an American surfer, who often shares several surfing prompts over his social media handles. Likewise, recently he shared a still of a longboard surfer, who is not wearing a surf leash. And, as a result, various surfing enthusiasts disregarded Brent’s post for the negligence of surfing safety.

Surfing fans took a toll on a Surfer for neglecting surfing safety

In his recent post, California-based surfer, Brent Flaaten shared a Facebook post of a female longboard surfer wherein she didn’t wear a surf leash. Interestingly, Brent captioned the post by writing, “Leashless…” However, surfing fans took a toll on the surfer by leaving some criticizing comments on Brent’s post. Flaaten had to take the brunt of the criticisms since advocating careless surfing practices could lead to disastrous consequences.

While some fanatics strongly disagreed with leashless surfing, some favored the idea by saying, “Leashless surfing resulted in stronger swimming, more water-savvy surfers”. Clearly, surfing fans rather have different ideas regarding safety measures required for surfing.

But what is a surf leash?

A surf leash is a stretchable urethane cord. One end is tied to the rear end of the surfboard, while another is tied around the ankle of the surfer. The idea behind wearing the leash is to ensure the safety of both the surfer and fellow swimmers. Moreover, the leash prevents the infliction of harm and injuries during dangerous wipeouts.

However, many longboard surfers deny wearing one, as according to them it restricts their ability to move around the board. But, many experienced surfers recommend wearing the safety apparatus. What do you think?
