While it’s no secret that Oahu, Hawaii, produces some of the giant waves ever known to humans, surfers fancy the beach for the same reason. The North Shore of Oahu is a common designation for surfers from all over the globe, who wish to catch those large, towering waves. And Jamie O’Brien just happened to be in luck very recently. Although he was psyched to chart the biggest wave of his life, the scale of that wave also left him frightened.

Jamie O’Brien is a Hawaiian surfer, who grew up near some of the most notorious waves on the planet. Therefore, picking a career in surfing came almost like a second calling to him. However, in his years of surfing experience, even O’Brien couldn’t imagine the size of the waves he surfed recently.

Jamie O’Brien grew up in a house that was located in front of the Banzai Pipeline, the surfing Mecca of Oahu’s North Shore. He started surfing when he was a mere 6-year-old boy, and by the time he entered his 20s, O’Brien became a professional surfer. However, it wasn’t till he was 39 that he rode the biggest wave of his life.

O’Brien recently took to Facebook and wrote, “Surfing the biggest wave of my life”. He attached the video of him surfing on Oahu’s North Shore, where he said, “Oh my God! I definitely caught the biggest wave of my life. Hands down. I was very scared”. He added, “It’s gonna be the biggest day of the year, maybe even the last five years”.

After surfing those mammoth waves, O’Brien also mentioned that the waves must’ve ranged somewhere between 20-30 feet high. Even for a 6’2″ tall and 194 lbs heavy Jamie O’Brien, it was scary. O’Brien is one of the youngest surfers ever to win the Pipeline Masters. He won the Rip Curl competition in 2009, and he also survived an intense fracture at 16 years of age while surfing at the Pipeline. But these feats didn’t provide him with an extra blanket of courage when facing those massive waves standing on his surfboard.

O’Brien then shifted the video to another frame, where he asked some of his friends if that was the largest wave they ever faced. The answer was a resounding ‘Yes‘. It’s both scary and exciting for a surfer to know that no matter how many large waves they have braved before, there’s always a larger wave awaiting them.
