The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach is a renowned place for the World Surf League Championship. It has introduced many talents to the world. Likewise, Hawaiian surfer, Kelly Slater has been a prominent fixture of the place, having won 4 trophies there. However, Slater was only 22 when he first competed in Bells in 1994. That year he surpassed two other accomplished surfers like Gary Elkerton and Martin Potter.
Today, the 11-time world surfing champion took to his Instagram to look back to the days when he beat Elkerton in the semifinals and Potter in the finals. Previously, Potter defeated Slater, and the win in 1994 was his clear reply to that.

From his very first day in surfing competitions, Slater has proved his dominance. In fact, he’s still going great in his three decades of career. Recently, the Hawaiian legend posted a story on his Instagram sharing a video from Surf Radio 55013. It was in 1994 when he won the Pipe Masters competition. However, in the story, Slater recounted the head-to-head contest he shared with the opponents.

“Just snuck past @garykongelkerton in the ’94 semis when he gave me a medium size wave under his priority…” wrote Kelly in the caption. Evidently, both of them were showing incredible feats in the medium wave. While Slater was showing off his sliding and rotation using the surfboard, Elkerton, on the other hand, replied with his expertise in the heat. However, finally, the world champ defeated Elkerton by scoring 25.50 points at the end of the event.

This gave him the ticket to the finale and to confront Potter who beat him sometime back. Slater was resilient enough to make his way and take revenge. However, as he wrote in the story, “@mrpottz and I fell a bunch in the final but I finally got the job done. Pottz had beaten me in Japan just a few events before this at the end of ’93 so I owed him once.”
In the 1994 Rip Curl Pro, Martin Potter scored a huge 28.30 points, which the league thought would be unbeatable, until Slater finished in 29.70 making a new record. Nevertheless, with this win, Slater recovered from his previous debacle and became the new champion of the tour. Significantly, he won again at the same place in 2006, 2008, and 2010.
