The deep blue ocean harbors a multitude of dangers within its infinity. From whetted reefs to man-eating predators, the turquoise water is the residence of probably every ferocity that can harm the sea pursuers. But have you ever heard of a seal attack? Well, seals are quite inquisitive when encountering humans, but those semiaquatic mammals do not usually attack. However, recently, a Cornwall-based surfer got brutally attacked by a seal and ended up wounded viciously.
Nathan Phillips, a native of Porthleven, was catching waves in Cornwall along with his friend Pete on March 5th. While paddling into the sea, Phillips was taken by surprise when a seal suddenly attacked him. Nevertheless, his board got fiercely crashed into his leg, and a bone in his shin snapped into two. However, it is not the fracture in his foot that became the real ordeal. Then, what could be more grueling than a seal attack and the resultant bone splinter? Let’s find out.

As per the report of Cornwall Live, after he got attacked by the seal, Phillips’ friend Pete helped him paddle a half-mile back to the shore. Mentioning his injury, the Cornwall native stated, “I could see it was an open fracture”. Once he got to the bank, the surfer was treated by the paramedics. However, because of Phillips’ 6’2’’ stature, medics faced difficulty to accommodate his full frame in the air ambulance. “Apparently I was too tall for it”, said Phillips. But did he make it to the hospital on time?
To everyone’s relief, after a couple of hours, the land ambulance arrived, which was long enough for the surfer to settle in completely. He was then taken to the nearby local hospital. Though he rescued the brutal surfing mishap, Phillips went through agonizing pain following the accident. “I was so stressed that night I didn’t sleep”, conceded the surfer. But, his friends’ kind gesture consoled him immensely.

Phillips’ close-knit companions set up the GoFoundMe page for raising funds for his operation. Expressing his heartfelt gratitude, the Cornwall surfer asserted, “I woke up to two of my friends setting up fundraising pages and I’m blown away by how kind my friends are and how beautiful the surf community is down here in Cornwall”. Extending his regard for everyone who helped, Phillips added, “It’s been really hard to thank everybody for saving my life on the day and also the donations as I’m unable to work now”. Though it was one abominable surfing accident, Nathan Phillips’ friends and many from the surfing fraternity helped him cope with the painful episode.
The ocean indeed harbors a pandora box full of dangers. While some make it safely to the dry land, others face a darker fate. The seal attack is one of those ferocious episodes that surfers and swimmers wish not to become the spectators of, don’t you agree?
