From Billabong Pipeline to Mavericks, the deep blue oceans are home to every thrilling wave barrel. Nonetheless, the ferocity of big waves sometimes makes even pro surfers introspect; is it wise to paddle on such spectacles, or better to leave the ocean’s embrace? One such wave pinnacle resides in Brazil near Rio de Janeiro, known as the Shock Slab. Though an adrenaline rush, the Shock is host to some of the most challenging waves in Brazil.  And, who better knows it than the surfers who surfed the slab and fell prey to its wipeouts?

In August 2022, four of the most prominent Brazilian surfing prodigies, Lucas Chianca ‘Chumbo’, Valentin Neves, Facundo Arreyes, and Felipe Cesarano went on a voyage to surf the Shock Slab. The surfing aficionados paddled with their surfboard toward the giant slab, with the cameras recording their courageous spree from the drone over their heads. What followed, startled the spectators and the videographers filming the surfers’ brave attempt.

Last year in September, the news platform Magicseaweed took to its Instagram handle to share the surfing spree of Chumbo, Neves, Arreyes, and Cesarano. In the video, the surfers can be seen taking the Shock wave one by one with the help of a tow-in leash. However, after touching the wave crest, the surfers were brutally wiped out by the slab and were stuck underwater for an extended period of time. Captioning the post, the media house penned, “Brazil’s horror slab woke up, took its pound of flesh last week!”

More so, the videographer, Matheus Couto, in a conversation with Magicseaweed, who filmed the wipeouts, explained the rasping nature of the shock and stated, “It’s not simple to surf this wave”. He added, “It has lots of water moving and it’s really unpredictable, when you go on the wave you don’t know if it’s gonna be the barrel of your life or the wipeout of your life”.

Couto further pulled off the curtains from the minacious nature of the Brazilian shock waves and shared several tidbits about the barrels. “There are some shallow parts, and some surfers have already been hit by the rocks after they had huge wipeouts. The end of the barrel is difficult as well because as the water is moving, it makes the end of the wave messy and lots of surfers fall there”.

Expressing his appreciation for Chumbo, Neves, Arreyes, and Cesarano, the videographer conceded, “ These people who surf here are real warriors. They do it because they love it”. Surfing the Shock Slab indeed requires a greater amount of moxie and courage. Nevertheless, while it is famous for the thrill residing on its crest, the slab is infamous for the brutal wipeouts that sometimes create mayhem. What do you think of the slab’s brutal nature?
