Kelly Slater has been dominating surfing for the past ten years. He has given countless moments to his fans. His love and passion for the sport are evident in his performances. Kelly spends the majority of his time in the water, either playing or practicing. His fans always wondered how he would spend his time when he takes an off from surfing.

Kelly Slater is a true ambassador of surfing sport. He’s been both the youngest and the oldest pro surfing champion and has shown immense dedication and temperament toward keeping the integrity of the sport. But, this dedication sometimes transformed into an obsession for him. 

How does Kelly Slater feel if he doesn’t get to surf?

In 2009, the champion featured in the popular radio show ‘Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me’. On the show, he gave intriguing insights into the surfing culture. He also shared exciting information about his attitude toward the game and tips for emerging surfers.

One moderator asked him about his attitude when he cannot surf. Kelly told him that those are generally tough times for him. He said, “For me, it’s like a withdrawal almost like torture.”

Kelly added that the struggle becomes tougher if good waves are on the shore. “If the waves are perfect and I am not able to surf I’ll probably act like some sort of a drug addict.” Kelly was eyeing his tenth championship title back then.

The overall mood of the whole conversation was very light and cheerful. Kelly Slater answered all questions gracefully. He described how it feels to be in the surfing community. He mentioned there is mutual respect for every surfer, and they try to give equal opportunities to every surfer.

Slater, who made his professional debut in 1990, is still going strong at age 50. Slater also triumphed at the Billabong Pro Pipeline earlier this year. It seems like his obsession is proving to be a boon for Slater’s performance.
