Nature has an endless bounty to offer to our souls ravaged by routine. One looks at the pearly waves and the candy-colored sunset, and forgets everything but living in the moment. Surfing, while a top-notch recreation, does take a lot of stamina. What better way to relax after a major surfing session, than to lie on the sandy beach and watch the sun go down?

Majority of the tourists, while visiting Australia, only think about hotspots such as the Opera House or Bondi Beach. Well, they’re missing out, because Avalon has much to offer be it fresh food, rip curls, or some magnificent sunsets and rainbows. Recently, a video posted by Sydney.com on their official Facebook page showed Avalon Beach in all its colorful glory.

In the video, the sky had turned orange and the waves crashed to the coast harmoniously, as a rainbow peeked through the clouds. Sounds like heaven, yes? Avalon Beach is certainly that for surfers. One of Sydney’s Northern Beaches, it is located in the Barrenjoey Peninsula between Bilgola Beach and Whale Beach. When the wind is coming from the northeast direction, it is considered one of the best surfing spots in Australia.

When the swell is strong, powerful lefts roll down the north end of the beach. Sometimes, even when the waves are not that big, the swells pack enough punch to prove dangerous to a non-experienced surfer. These waves have been responsible for honing some of the best water athletes, such as the bodyboarder Mandy Zieren and pro surfer Ces Wilson. But perhaps, the most popular water athlete related to Avalon is the legend, Kelly Slater.

The 11-time world champion, Kelly Slater, and the quaint town of Avalon have a history together. Slater lived in Avalon on and off for 15 years, and during that time, he fell in love with the Northern Beaches of Australia. In fact, one time while surfing at Avalon Beach, Slater broke not one, but two of his surfboards in two; such is the might of the unsuspecting waves at the beach.

According to The Inertia, addressing the incident, Slater said, “Broke two boards today. Took a few beatings, had to pay my dues. It’s been a while since I surfed here. It was all fun, we had a fun crew of guys out there.” Clearly, you can take the man out of Avalon but you can never take Avalon out of the man.
