Born and brought up in Hawaii, fear is something the 39-year-old athlete has long parted ways with. However, in the social media update, he spoke, “Everybody was pretty scared but we’re getting the boards ready right now.” Apparently, to reach the destination, they had to hike all the way which tired out and spooked all the surfers.
“The hike was really gnarly, slipping and sliding. My knee didn’t feel the best… little bit of frustration went down on that hike. It was legit. We were like scaling the cliffs,” the pro detailed. When the hike itself was so terrifying, its not difficult to imagine the intensity of the session. Hence, the Mexican Death Slab was referred to as, “this is novelty heaven right here,” by the athlete.
The Freesurfer’s video impressively captured the essence of the location, with waves crashing into the bouldering reef while the surfers tried their to best to tame one. “It was just like so much raw power,” O’Brien said. Bits of his epic falls were also displayed in the source. Nevertheless, he confessed it was not one of his best sessions, as he was on the “wrong board” and also “definitely scared.” Likewise, he recently took up another interesting challenge in his homeland.
