Six projects in Rockaway Beach have been funded, thanks to an amazing $33.07 million investment from NYC Parks officials. These activities, which range from stages to playgrounds, improve beachgoers’ overall experience.
According to CBS New York, New York City’s breathtaking beaches, which span a remarkable fourteen-mile stretch, opened for the summer season at 10 a.m. on Saturday. “I went in before and it’s really cold, so I don’t think I’m gonna go in again, too early,” said Jaylene Medina of Bay Ridge.
While the water may still be chilly for some, visitors can still enjoy a variety of fun activities, such as indulging in delectable food, going on amusement rides, and playing games throughout the Memorial Day Weekend. “Put your foot in the sand, feel the sun on your body, and I think that’s the beginning of summer for me, when I can do that,” said Gayatri Naraine, a resident of Elmhurst, Queens. Notably, Rockaway Beach is the only dedicated surfing area in the city, making it a welcoming space for surfers of all abilities to enjoy the waves.

The new developments at Rockaway Beach have added intriguing features and facilities to the surfing area. A brand-new leisure area with an ingeniously crafted labyrinth, game tables, drinking fountains, and practical bike racks has been built on Shorefront Parkway between Beach 92nd and 94th Streets. Additionally, a performance area has been unveiled, offering a stage for theatrical and musical acts, neighborhood gatherings, religious services, and big-screen movie screenings. Furthermore, a new flagpole has been placed at the Beach 94-95th Street Gateway Plaza and Performance Space, adding a touch of grandeur to the beachfront.
As beach enthusiasts eagerly await the summer fun at Rockaway Beach, officials issue a reminder to prioritize safety. The importance of lifeguards cannot be overstated, urging beachgoers to wait until they are on duty. However, a recurring challenge looms as a lifeguard shortage for the second consecutive year poses a potential setback to some summer plans. “The city needs 1,400 lifeguards total, but only about 500 are currently in the pipeline,” Parks Department Commissioner Sue Donoghue said. Despite this hurdle, the allure of Rockaway Beach’s upgrades promise an unforgettable experience for those who want to enjoy the sun, surf, and sand under the watchful eyes of lifeguards.
