While surfing induces thrill within wave chasers, it also poses a series of dangers for its pursuers. Be it a surfing mishap with whetted reefs or a ferocious shark attack, the salty reverie harbors every peril within its infinity. Though some end up becoming prey to those hazards, others fight with all their might and make it safely to the shore. The story of Californian surfer, Todd Endris, also reflects a courageous rescue from a brutal shark attack that almost ended his life. Nonetheless, he extricated himself from the predator’s clutches when all the odds were against him, as the great white shark hit him three times, peeling the skin off his back and mauling his right leg to the bone.
In August 2007, Endris was catching waves with his friends at Marina State beach in California. While paddling toward the barrels, a shark took him by surprise and lacerated him mercilessly. The next thing he knew, he was swimming in bloody waters.

In 2010, Endris revealed his coping mechanism following his encounter with a great white shark. While giving away tidbits about his rescue operation, he thoroughly described his near-death experience. The Californian stated, “I knew what was happening but what can you do about it. There’s not really anything. It’s like trying to fight a car that’s moving at you”. He further conceded, “it hit me first really really hard and couldn’t fit me into his mouth on the first bite because of the way I was sitting on my board”.
More so, the ocean’s beast grabbed the surfer by his torso and wounded him mercilessly. “He bent down on my torso which is like about think about a 40-inch bite”, added Endris. Explaining his reflex of fighting with the shark, the Californian asserted, “I was hitting him the whole time. My left fist I was going for where I thought his eyes would be”. However, his attempts at fighting the shark went in vain, as the predator latched his jaws on the surfer’s leg.
“He latched on my leg and then and that’s pretty much the worst fear you don’t want to lose a limb. So I continued to fight but tried not to yank my leg out of his mouth and punching him and kicking him with my other leg”, asserted Endris. Nonetheless, to everyone’s relief, the shark released his foot and swam away into the ocean’s infinity. Interestingly, it was not a human, or a plank that pulled Endris out of his difficult situation. In a completely wholesome turn of events, the Californian was rescued by another aquatic beast!
Dolphins came to Endridefensence and helped him get away from the scene
While the shark lacerated the surfer in the most barbaric manner, a pod of dolphins saved him from becoming shark bait. Expressing his heartfelt gratitude towards the dolphins, the surfer stated, “Really saved my life. I feel like they were jumping over the top of me and swarming around me. They really kind of created a wall between me and the shark where he couldn’t get back to me”.

He then caught the next wave and swam back to the bank.”I somehow had enough adrenaline or drive to live or whatever it was hope that made me really want to catch that wave and make it” to the shore. His companions then helped resuscitate him, and took him to the hospital for further treatment. In the words of Endris, his rescue was “truly a miracle“.
