The waters of California, pristine as they are, also produce large waves ideal for surfing. The ‘Ocean beach’ in San Francisco often takes the cake in serving up as a dream surfing spot. While waves as high as three stories often grace the beach, the characteristic foggy weather of San Francisco also frequently envelopes the beach. Thus, making it more of a high-risk zone for surfers. One such surfer, Bianca Valenti, suffered from her worst nightmare in her childhood at this beach. She is now an adult, all set to take on some of the massive waves to chart new heights in her sport.
Bianca Valenti wanted to surf huge waves since she was merely a 7-year-old kid. Her record waves charted up to 80 feet high. But one can truly understand the gravity and impact of her accomplishments, only after looking back at one of the biggest scares from her childhood.

“I actually almost died here at ocean beach the first time I started surfing big waves”, said Valenti to Fox Sports KTVU. She met them at Ocean beach, San Francisco, on a windy day. Not many would revisit such a scene from their childhood, but Valenti wasn’t most people. She fell back in love with waves and looks back on the incident as an unfortunate one, but something to learn from.

“I ducked down, and I got throttled, spun and rag-dolled, and I was spinning and twisting and flipping”, she continued narrating her experience to Fox Sports KTVU. It was a large multi-storied wave that came crashing down on her on that day. The force of it was enough to take her for a spin. It was akin to the giant waves in Lake Superior that a bunch of surfers recently caught hold of amidst a winter storm.
All of it happened in a matter of seconds, and all Valenti remembers is how massive the wave actually was. She felt she was going to die. However, Valenti came out without any major harm to herself. She took back an important lesson on that day and has since looked back on this incident not with a scarred memory but as a learning curve.

Although Valenti was extremely scared then, that large wave soon became a therapeutic experience for her. Bereft of any emotions, Valenti came out with a stronger yearning for charting larger waves. She is currently a world-champion big wave surfer and constantly thrives to create equal opportunity for men and women in the given sport.

Looking to revolutionize the sport for women entirely, Valenti still believes there are gaps to be bridged between men and women. She said, “There are more spots in competitions for men than women”. Leading by example, Valenti is sure to bring about bigger differences in the near future.
