With two main ocean basins surrounding it, Florida is the mainstream hub for surfing and surfers. From the Billabong pipeline to Mavericks, Florida houses every big wave there is. However, most of the Floridian beaches are considered lethal for the number of death rates it poses due to plenty of shark attacks and other natural causes.
Recently, a list of America’s most deadly beaches has been revealed, and it’s bad news for the Floridians as seven of the top ten beaches reside on the Atlantic coast of the country. Nevertheless, the beach that topped the list is none other than the surfers’ favorite, New Smyrna beach. From shark attacks to hurricanes and rough waters, New Smyrna harbors every danger that can pose threat to mankind.
Favorite for surfing, Florida beach ranked deadliest in the US

As per the report of Travel Publication, the New Smyrna beach in Volusia county, Florida is considered the “deadliest” beach in the States. Moreover, it has a danger score of 8.14 out of 10. When it comes to shark attacks, New Smyrna has reported the highest number of malign accidents than any other beach in the US.

New Smyrna beach had twice the number of shark attacks compared to other beaches in America. Precisely, New Smyrna reported 32 shark attacks since 2010. However, other than New Smyrna, the rest of the 6 beaches on the list also made a serious case of lethal accidents. Cocoa beach, which resides in the southernmost region of Florida holds the second rank on the list. It has a danger score of 7.57 out of 10.

Another oceanic shore that made it to the third position is the neighboring coastal beach of New Smyrna called Ormond beach. Ormond currently holds a score of 7.48 out of 10.
Institutions that generated the rankings

The rankings were generated by using data collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Shark Institute. It ranked the beaches on three main parameters: the number of surf fatalities since 2010, the number of shark attacks since 2010, and the number of hurricanes between 1851 and 2020. As per the report, “Florida was the state most affected by hurricanes”. Therefore, “seven out of 10 most dangerous beaches are found in” Florida.

The beach that ticked all three parameters is the well-known surfing spot of the States, which is New Smyrna beach. Clearly, with 7 beaches on the list, Florida now became one of the major threat-prone zone.
