Award Winning Drone Movie Saw Brazilian Surfing Star and Rescuer Getting Engulfed by Monstrous White Foaming Waves

The situation in surfing is extreme whenever the waves get ugly. The sport, which totally depends on waves, faces disasters once in a while. Surfing also has a big wave category, which is as thrilling and dangerous as it gets. There are several places in the world that are perfect for surfers who enjoy this thrill, but sometimes it doesn’t take long for things to go south.

Back in 2017, in Nazaré, Portugal, Brazilian surfing talent, Pedro “Scooby” Vianna faced the monstrosity of surfing. While regular waves are around 3 feet to 10 feet tall, the big wave surfer got caught in the clutches of 70-foot tall waves. Not only he but also the one who was trying to rescue him went through the same fate.

When a 70-foot wave comes at you

The information was extracted from “The Big Ugly” drone film that also won the “News & Documentary” Award at the 2017 Los Angeles Drone Film Festival.

On February 28, 2017, Scooby was going through the waves at 45 miles per hour on his rattling surfboard. He had no idea he was being pursued by a 70-foot monstrous wave. As the storm approached, Scooby was blown off his surfboard and was engulfed in the ocean. His friend Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca, on a jet ski, tried to rescue the surfer.

Scooby grabbed the rear tow board latched to the jet ski. They made an attempt to outrun the next wave but were unsuccessful. The white foaming waves made Chumbo lose control of the jet ski and both went down together. Now the two of them needed help. This is where came in the third guy in the jet ski Everaldo Pato.

 How did Everaldo Pato made the rescue possible?

Pato kept his cool in this harsh situation. He first rescued Scooby with his jet ski, then, after some minutes, he went for Chumbo. Although there was one last problem to the rescue, Chumbo was pretty close to the rocks. The stormy waves were not in their favor, as they could crash him into the rocks with no mercy.

Pato came through in the clutch by grabbing Chumbo in the foamy white waves. Chumbo was also rescued the same way as Scooby, and the situation was under control thanks to the calmness of Pato. Normal surfing wipeouts are enough to take lives, but this was nothing normal. A wipeout in the stormy 70-foot waves was recorded as one of the deadliest wipeouts in history where no one got killed.
