“Always Looking for That Magic One”: Refusing Reality Kelly Slater Once Recalled the Most Special Surfing Board in 2020

Kelly Slater is the most well-known surfer in the world and has used numerous surfboards. Throughout his significant surfing career, he has lost track of the surfboards he used. Although he mentioned it once in an interview, he still remembered one special surfboard. That surfboard was also not his own, which made it even more special.

In an interview back in 2020, Kelly Slater was asked about his surfboard collection. He was asked about the surfboard that carried the magic he always used in competitions. Although the surfing icon laughed out loud because of the question. He recalled the surfboard that was given to him by none other than Simon Anderson. He is an Australian competitive surfer who is also credited with the invention of the three-fin surfboard design. The invention is also called “Thruster” and Slater was a big fan of that surfboard given by Anderson for a reason.

“The next one! Haha. Always looking for that magic one. But overall it was probably the Simon Anderson I had in 2003 or 2005. I won events at Lowers, JBay, Bells and I think Teahupo’o on that board,” Slater said. Out of all his surfboards, Simon Anderson’s was his favorite. According to Slater, it did have the charm for which he won a lot of surfing events with that board, though he won the events because of his skills. The question even made Slater wonder if the surfboard really had magic or not. What a question! 

“I forgot that I had given it back to Simon afterward and searched my storage for about a year or two only to realize where it had gone,” Slater added. The surfing icon even forgot that he gave the surfboard back to its owner.

Although all these accomplishments are nothing against the one that is the most admired by the surfer. According to him, all his surfing achievements fall behind this single achievement that has also helped him throughout life.

Kelly Slater’s biggest accomplishment

Kelly Slater considers staying sober for all these years to be his greatest accomplishment. The surfer, in particular, was born in the 1970s and 1980s, when it was fairly common for people to experiment with drugs and alcohol.

Slater’s childhood wasn’t good because of his father, who suffered from alcoholism. He once described how that thing made their family financially unstable. His parents’ divorce was also due to this reason. Slater is also a fan of having beer sometimes, but he doesn’t like any hard liquor.
