For free surfer Jamie O’Brien, surfing has never been about chasing titles. The professional surfer proved his mettle to the world of surfing way back in the year 2004, when he won the Pipeline Masters as a wild card entry, becoming one of the youngest surfers to do so. However, O’Brien pivoted from a competitive surfing career that had barely started yet.

After filming his first surf film called Freak Show, Jamie O’Brien got a taste for filming. He ended his competitive surfing career in 2005 and embarked on a creative journey that earned him millions of followers all across social media. Now, O’Brien’s philosophy is simple, he wants to get “psyched” and ride some “gnarly” waves at beautiful locations all around the world.

According to O’Brien, there was “carnage out there, absolute bombs.” The surfer had some “gnarly attempts” while riding the waves, and also had a board or two hit him in his arm. However, the most unusual occurrence was when he was “pounded underwater” and he “hit something”. But what was it? After a few run-ins with the creature, Jamie O’Brien soon realized that it was a seal. When a seal popped up where O’Brien had just wiped out, he realized exactly what was causing him the grief.

O’Brien described the incident in the video, and said, “So I was getting pounded with a seal, then, the Grom took off behind me and almost killed me.” Be that as it may, the trip turned out to be successful as the pro surfer was able to ride some stunning waves at The Wedge, while encouraging all surfers to go down to the area for a great surfing experience.

The freak phenomenon that is The Wedge

The Wedge is located on Newport Beach, on the outskirts of Los Angeles, and is one of the most difficult waves to ride on the West Coast. What makes The Wedge so unique, and tough at the same time, is that it has mixed characteristics of a classic beach break, an unpredictable point break, and a pounding shore break. This natural phenomenon results from a 2,000-foot granite boulder jetty built by the Army Corps of Engineers in the mid-1930s.

The waves are rowdy out here and have been responsible for several broken bones; something not for the faint of the heart. While the waves provide a high peak, it also results in a vertical abyss, meaning the wipeouts are equally brutal. However, despite its difficulties, the wave remains one of the most sought-after on the West Coast.
