If one is surfing in the ocean, an encounter with sharks is not a far-fetched notion. Some might escape with just a sighting. But for some, the experience is not a pleasant one. And for others, it can be downright terrifying. Unfortunately for Bert Krebs, his encounter with sharks was an extremely dangerous one. Dangerous enough to say that he was lucky to escape with his life intact.
Sometime last month, Krebs was harshly bitten on the foot by a shark when he was surfing off the north end of Jupiter Island. The incident was painful, and he described it as a “bloody mess”. His story is proof that sharks may be lurking just beneath the surface of the water, and can prove to be an ever-present danger to the surfers.

Bert Krebs has been a surfer for more than three decades. Even so, he never would have thought that his latest surfing experience would turn horrific. The surfer was chasing waves in Hobe Sound. According to WPTV, Krebs fell off his surfboard and landed in chest-deep water. After falling into the water, he thought he hit a rock. But that was far from the truth.
Krebs recalled the incident, saying, “I thought I kicked a rock or something. And all of the sudden, there was the bite. I knew right away what happened. I knew it was a bite. And I yelled, ‘shark bite’ to my friends.” Upon hearing his call, his friends rushed to his rescue, and carried him to a nearby road. Surprisingly, a retired firefighter who had heard about the incident was waiting for them with medical supplies. Talk about efficiency.
After cleaning the wound, Bret Krebs’ injuries were assessed, and grim is the right word to describe them. The shark had bitten him on the foot and had also taken off a chunk of his toe. In spite of that, Krebs somehow kept his cool the entire time.
The incident did nothing to diminish his love for water
Even though he lost a part of his toe, Krebs remained cool as a cucumber. “For some reason, I was calm. I wasn’t freaking out or anything. I kind of was accepting what was going on.” He was taken to the trauma department of St. Mary’s Medical Centre, where he was treated and released three days later. He has not healed fully yet, as the recovery will take a month at least. Yet, he is itching to get back into the water.

He describes his relationship with surfing and water in a very positive light, despite the incident he suffered through. “I love it. It’s a passion of mine. It enhances my life. There are benefits, physical, mental, spiritual,” he said. Clearly, his love for the water has prepared him for whatever might come along with it. “I’m just visiting their world and I accept the things that go along with it.”
