Kite surfing has inspired a new technology that can help the environment. Known for tackling the swells with the help of the speedy winds, this sport creates the next level of adrenaline for any person. However, the mechanism behind this sport has now helped create a technology to control pollution and make logistics easier.
Recently, a French engineering company decided to use the mechanism of parafoils (an aerodynamic fabric) in their technology. They have decided to use 1000-meter-long parafoils for the cargo ships. This project known as Seawing and is being developed to increase the speed of cargo ships while controlling the emission rate produced by them.

This environmentalist-approaching project known as the Seawing is being created by the geniuses of the French engineering company Airseas. The company claims that this technology can cut carbon emissions by 20%. Seawing will be using large kites to help move the huge cargo ships and hence reduce the fuel burned by the ship.
The 100-meter-long kite will not only be pulled by the force of the wind but will also fly in an eight-loop rotation. The rotation will generate a large airflow, creating a huge force for the ship. In an interview with CNN, one of the engineers stated, “What differentiates it from other wind solutions is that the wing is not just pulled by the wind and countered by the ship.” Instead, it flies in figure-of-eight loops, which multiply the pulling effect of the airflow to give what he calls “crazy power.”
Currently, Seawing has received funds totaling about 2.75 million dollars from the European Union. And this technology will be completely available by 2025; however, the company has already gained a few orders from Airbus and a logistics Company called K-line based in Asia. But the real question is: will this new technology be accepted on a large scale?

Will the Seawing be accepted by the industry?
Usually, the technology based on wind assessment for shipping is not accepted by the industry. Seawing as a technology is also dependent on the direction of the wind. And sometimes the winds are blowing against the logistic ships, causing the system to not perform well. According to the engineers of the project, Seawing cannot be used in such situations.

But on the other hand, the technology can cut down on 20% of the consumption of fuel for about 80% of sea trade. The main initiative of this technology is to help the environment and create an impact. As the French team believes that wind is part of the new industrial revolution and will become an integral piece of the shipping industry soon.
