Nathan Chen reveals why he chose Rocketman

Back when he arrived in Beijing, he skipped the opening ceremony to not have any trouble with his preparations for the Olympics. Chen dominated the sport from start to finish, from the short program to the extensive program. Using Elton John’s song provided a feeling of intrigue for the fans. Moreover, the performance he showcased was incredible. Selecting songs is a major part of a figure skating performance. Thus, he revealed the reasons for choosing Rocketman for his program.

“This program was done actually like two years ago and it was done by my choreographer Marie-France out in Montreal. She is the coach of like 11 different ice dance teams at this Olympics. At the time, Rocketman just came out, and she was like; ‘Hey watch this movie, see what you think.’ I loved it.”

“I loved the music. Skating for me, especially for me when you are halfway through the program, you’re tired and I need music that brings out energy. Elton John was perfect for that,” said Chen.

Dancing to the tunes of Rocketman saw him performing his famous five quadruple jumps. These jumps were stunning to watch as he defeated two-time Olympic gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu with them.

Not only that, he delivered a record-breaking performance for the short program.

A world record in Beijing

Before the long program, Chen showed the world why he is regarded as the best figure skater in the world. In his short program display, he broke Hanyu’s world record by scoring 113.97 points in the program. This was much needed for him to solidify his position of securing the gold medal at the Olympics.
