A star runner who won gold medals in the Olympics, Murray Halberg’s death has stunned the world. Black Sox, a softball team, paid their tribute to the legend. Wearing black bands to honor Murray, they showed solidarity in grief with the sporting community. The Black Sox heard this sad news after defeating Philippines in a thrilling match in the softball World Cup, in 2022.  


Reactions to Murray’s death poured in from the sporting community and millions of fans. The news of his death also gave the Black Sox team additional motivation to perform well, according to their coach Darryl Marino.

We are all in a bit of shock to hear that such a legend of the sport in New Zealand has passed”, the team reacted“It was easy to acknowledge him and wear those black armbands”, the team further spoke

Both Halberg and Black Sox proudly represented New Zealand at different events. Though their sport was different, they both had the same objective of winning as many medals as possible for New Zealand. It was this common objective that made the Black Sox relate with Murray Halberg.

A Brief Glimpse of Murray’s legacy

Born in Eketahuna, Murray Halberg played rugby till 1950. After an injury in his shoulder, Murray didn’t give up. He then chose running as the sport for his future career.

Winning the 5000m race in the 1960 Olympics, Halberg soon became a well-known athletics legend. He is also one of the few athletics champions to have broken 3 international records in less than 20 days. The running legend also won at the Commonwealth games. 

The last race he participated in was at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where he secured seventh place. He also founded ‘The Halberg Trust’ in 1963 to help children with physical disabilities. This organization also provides awards to noteworthy sportsmen every year. Also, Murray was the fourth famous personality to win the Blake Medal.
