Tottenham may have secured a statement win over Manchester United yesterday, but their women’s side had a vastly different experience. The North London derby was a one-sided affair, as Spurs ladies endured a crushing 5-0 defeat to Arsenal Women. Among the many goal-scoring stars was USWNT star Emily Fox, who netted a stunning goal. In fact, she credits her teammate Leah Williamson for helping her pull off the banger against their arch-rivals.
The Lionesses’ skipper, who also wears the armband for the Gunners, played a little yet key role in her fellow teammate’s wonder goal. Of course, a player like Fox, who plays as a right-back, rarely sees her name on the scoresheet. But talk about when she does, as the 26-year-old might just have netted the goal of the season.
“Yeah, before I got it, Leah screamed at me to shoot it,” began Fox while explaining her goal to Hayters TV in the aftermath. “So I had a lot of clarity on what I was gonna do. But yeah, just the right timing, right contact and [it] ended up great. I was happy to kind of finish it off for the team and win,” added the former NC Courage star.

Notably, Emily Fox’s strike was the cherry on top for last night’s occasion. She lit up a packed Emirates Stadium with 56,000 supporters, helping her side remain unbeaten at home. The match also marked Chloe Kelly’s long-awaited return to an Arsenal shirt—seven years after she last played for the club. Kelly rejoined the Gunners on loan last month after struggling for minutes and enjoyment at Manchester City, having made just one WSL appearance this season.
The goal fiesta began after Alessia Russo forced an own goal from Clare Hunt in the 15th minute. It was then Spanish forward Mariona Caldentey who doubled the lead just 10 minutes before the first half. Within five minutes after the break, Frida Maanum added a third, with Alessia Russo finding the bottom left corner to make it four before the hour mark.
With the victory, Arsenal retain their place at third in the WSL table. They are three points behind Manchester United, with Chelsea leading with a tally of 40. Then again, for Fox, this victory is far beyond just securing three points. “We knew this was going to be a big game in terms of the derby, just competitiveness and rivalry, making a statement,” she said while speaking to ESPN.

The US international praised her teammates for delivering a show to all the fans who turned up in numbers at their support. This also led to Emily receiving recognition for her own achievement.

In a similar interview to Hayters TV, star midfielder Kim Little also heaped commendation on Emily Fox’s remarkable goal. “It was a very nice clean strike, off the post, top corner. You can’t get much better than that,” said the Arsenal No. 10, emphasizing how great it is to have Fox also get her name on the scoresheet in style.

Yes, the former NWSL defender may receive all the praise she deserves. However, for Emily, it’s all about the continuous training that led to such a beautiful goal. No wonder the right-back only briefly acknowledged the credit where it was due. “We’re always itching to do extras,” said Fox, acknowledging how her continued practice on crossing and finishing with her teammates led her to score an absolute banger.
Be that as it may, it was a good day at the office for Arsenal Women, especially for Emily Fox. Let’s hope it stays that way.
