In a landmark decision and after years of tumultuous protests, USWNT is getting what they want. Megan Rapinoe and her teammates have led vocal arguments on equal pay between men and women. Thus, the US Soccer Federation and the US Women’s team agreed regarding the settlement. The agreement states equal pay between the USMNT and USWNT across all competitions, including the World Cup. However, the former goalkeeper of USWNT, Hope Solo, thinks otherwise.

In her recent podcast with Carli Lloyd, she mentioned the finer details of the agreement and that it did not match up to her expectations. Moreover, she talked about how players like Rapinoe and Alex Morgan were ‘hustled’ with this decision.
Hope Solo feels betrayed
After being left out of the squad due to controversial reasons, Solo is not happy with the decision. Earlier, the US women’s national team filed a lawsuit against US soccer in 2019, entreating equal pay for both men and women while looking out for £52.8m in damages. But, the court dismissed the case in 2020. With the federation looking to give equal contracts last September for both teams, they have come to a landmark decision recently. The agreement sees players receive £17.7m as a part of the settlement.
“The reason for my sadness, the reason I feel gutted, kicked in the stomach, the reason why I feel betrayed and a bit hopeless is because the settlement is pathetic. After fighting for years for equal pay starting in 2015, the players still went on and agreed to a less-than-equal CBA.”
This settlement is not a “huge win.” It’s heartbreaking and infuriating. A “promise” of equal pay from the Federation and backpay for a select group of players isn’t equal pay and it’s not what this fight was about.

“They continued to believe in the promises of the [United States Soccer] Federation. They were outclassed, outmanoeuvred and then, finally, after pumping the brakes and doing a 180 in the fight of our life, they decided to show up to the party and they got hustled,” said Solo.

This has infuriated Solo as she spoke about Rapinoe and Morgan was being forced to come to an agreement.
Solo questions Rapinoe
The 2019 Ballon d’Or Féminin winner was vocal in this protest for equal pay. Solo, however, mentioned that she signed up for a “less-than-equal” deal, and it looked like a collective bargaining agreement. On the other hand, Rapinoe thinks it is a great decision for the players. She has been fighting alongside others for equal pay. At a time when equality is the way to go forward, Rapinoe loved the agreement between all the parties.
