Chelsea FC is on a roll in the current Women’s Super League. Indeed, in the 11 games, they have won 10, only had a draw in a single game, and with 31 points, they are at the top of the table. With every other team in the league wanting their position, they are just better at holding the WSL crown currently. However, recently the team has grabbed more attention after acquiring Naomi Girma.
Indeed, a plethora of rumors surfaced in the current month, suggesting that the American soccer star might be joining the English team. However, rumors are only rumors, and there were no official confirmations that she would agree to her transfer from San Diego FC in the NWSL to Chelsea FC in the WSL. While the transfer is significant, the English team perfectly knew how to introduce their whopping $1 million transfer in the blue jersey during their game against their rival Arsenal at Chelsea’s home ground.
The Stamford Bridge was filled with a crowd awaiting the arrival of Naomi Girma to the team that bleeds blue. Indeed, as seen on the official soccer team’s Instagram page, they uploaded a story that featured the American soccer star walking out of the ground, donning the #16, and being welcomed by a hyped crowd. As seen in the video, it did start to rain at the same time, but when does the weather stop soccer or its fans?

On January 26, the English team and the American soccer star made history together, as her contract is a world-record transfer fee of approximately $1.1 million. That’s the first time in women’s soccer that a certain player went to a team with that amount, especially a fee exceeding $1 million. Indeed, this particular record surpassed Zambia forward Racheal Kundananji, who moved from Madrid CFF to Bay FC last year in February. While Girma is excited to play for the English club, she did give out an emotional goodbye statement to her previous team on social media.
Naomi Girma will never forget the time she had with her former team
“San Diego, thank you for welcoming me with open arms three years ago. Playing here has been an incredible journey of growth, and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to begin my career with this amazing club,” Naomi Girma started her goodbye statement to the San Diego FC, where she was once a big part of it. Indeed, she was present since the team’s first season in the NWSL, and there are a lot of memories for her to discuss.

Furthermore, she added on her social media post, stating, “To my teammates, thank you for your friendship, support, and inspiration. You’ve truly changed me for the better, and I’ll forever cherish how much each and every one of you has impacted my life over the past three years. To my coaches and staff, thank you for creating an environment that allowed me to grow and reach my potential. Your encouragement and guidance have been invaluable.” For the three years she was a part of the American soccer club, she played with many distinct players and worked with coaches and staff members, ultimately forming irreplaceable bonds that will never shatter even if she moves to England for her new adventure with Chelsea.
With a token of gratitude, Girma also acknowledged the involvement of fans, stating, “To the fans, you made San Diego home and created the best atmosphere to play in. Your unwavering support is what makes being a part of this club so special. I’ll always be rooting alongside you! As I take on this next adventure, I’ll carry all of these memories and lessons with me. Forever grateful for this chapter 🫶🏾” Playing for the San Diego FC was a vital experience in her career, and it is something that she will never forget no matter where she goes in her stellar career.
