There can’t be any arguments about how the USWNT dominated the whole women’s soccer scene for the last decade. They won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics; in addition, to two World Cups in 2015 and 2019. One player that was significant to their success was Carli Lloyd. Winning the Olympic gold medal back in 2008, she provided the experience and leadership for players like Alex Morgan to flourish.

Hence, her retirement leaves a huge void for the USWNT. Likewise, to end her perfect career, she leads the goal scoring and assists charts for her national team, despite this being her last year in soccer. What a player!
Carli Lloyd leads the way
As 2021 came to an end, it was time for people to review the year. The USWNT, yet again, ended on a high with being ranked the number one side in the world. What’s more impressive are the performances of Lloyd. She scored 11 goals and created six assists in the whole year. For a person who is 39, that’s astonishing. Being an experienced personality, the composure in the final third speaks volumes of her talent. Having a similar aura to Landon Donovan from the USMNT, she is the undisputed leader for the USWNT. Thus, she ended her career in the grandest way possible.

The USWNT had a 17-2-5 win record while they capped around 37 players during this campaign. Although they could not win another gold medal, they ended the 2020 Tokyo Olympics claiming the bronze medal, which is probably the last one for the golden generation. They are on a 62 game, home-unbeaten streak, looking invincible.

After two decades of dominance, she planned to retire after this year’s Olympic Games. She made 316 appearances for her national team while scoring 134 goals and creating 61 assists to her credit. The influence and the technical ability will surely be missed. Megan Rapinoe and Lloyd linked well to take their country home on several occasions. Hence, she spoke in awe of her career while looking forward to the future.
“It’s been emotional. But there’s just a sense of peace and contentment that I feel — it’s just joy and happiness. It’s been an amazing journey and I gave it all I had, and now I can walk away into the next chapter,” said Lloyd.
Replacing Lloyd will not be a straightforward task. However, they have a host of talents in their never-ending conveyor belt. Carli Lloyd, however, will be remembered for her compelling contributions to the USWNT.
