“Long History of Service to the Country”- Megan Rapinoe’s Mother Discusses Her Patriotic Nature Leading to Involvement in Social Issues

Soccer star Megan Rapinoe has never ceased to raise her voice in support of social causes. The Olympic medalist has shed light on gender-related and pay-equity issues in soccer. Throughout her childhood, she has developed a strong sense of self-confidence. In numerous interviews, Megan has described how her patriotic family is the source of her strength and confidence.

In the past, Rapinoe faced backlash for kneeling during the national anthem. As a result, she had to come forward to clarify the situation as the criticism circled her. Nevertheless, her mother revealed how Megan belongs to a patriotic family.

Patriotic background of Megan Rapinoe

During two matches in 2016, Megan sat down on her knees while the national anthem was playing. It was in solidarity with former NFL player Colin Kaepernick, who also kneeled in protest. In addition, a former San Francisco player protested police brutality and racial injustice.

Megan’s mother revealed in 2019 that she was not the only person who suffered a backlash. Wherever her family went, they encountered difficulties. Meanwhile, some individuals have questioned Rapinoe in public venues and restaurants. The restaurants also removed the picture of Megan from the wall.

Her mother told Yahoo! Sports that Megan belongs to a “very patriotic family.” Reciting her family background, she added, “Her dad was drafted during the Vietnam War. … Her grandfather, who lives with us, he’s 94, World War II vet. My father, Korean War, suffered many injuries. I mean, we have a long family history of service to the country.” 

The walking protest, ‘Megan’

Several incidents have illustrated Megan’s status as a walking protester. Due to a pay disparity, she protested to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2016. Rapinoe is well-known for her philanthropic efforts.

Megan Rapinoe was also criticized for her relationship with Sue Bird, which she is in since 2016. In July, Joe Biden presented her with the ‘Presidential Medal of Freedom’ at the White House. As a result of Megan’s outspoken personality, she has encountered many social issues, but her passion for soccer has placed her straight into the hearts of many.
