The Women’s soccer legend was interviewed on NBC radio, where she recounted her first meeting with the basketball star Sue Bird. Sue is a 4x WNBC champion hailing from Seattle. Just like Rapinoe, she is a person of strong morals and opinions. So, when a photo of Rapinoe bending down to propose to Bird got viral, the fans were curious about how they met.

The athletes met at a photo shoot in 2016 and began seeing each other around 2017. However, after four years of a steady relationship, Megan finally proposed back in 2020.

In the interview, Rapinoe lined out how she greeted Bird during their first meeting .” She was in her basketball uniform and had her hair down. We passed each other, and she was like ‘Oh, hey! Are you ready for the game?” Then she told me she was like ‘yeah…how fun,'”. Safe to say, Bird was initially not impressed!

What is the Rapinoe-Bird dynamic currently like?

While recounting this very laughable incident, Megan also recounted how things are presently between them. The soccer star recollected fondly that as years have passed, they have grown closer. Rapinoe said, “And now we joke about it because the moment was a little silly.”
