“Let’s Go!” Screamed Phallon Tullis-Joyce on the pitch while raising both of her hands in the air to celebrate an out-of-this-world double save she made in yesterday’s FA Women’s Cup semifinal clash against arch-rivals Manchester City. The entire attendance at the Jole Stadium stood up after seeing the United goalie’s heroics to maintain the clean sheet in her side’s 0-2 win. In fact, this latest performance even led Emma Hayes to get called out by ardent fans to retain Tullis-Joyce for the USWNT‘s No. 1 spot.
For those who missed out on the goalkeeping antics of the 28-year-old, the save was made in the second half. United was already leading the game by a 6th-minute strike from Celin Bezet, followed by another 22nd strike from Grace Clinton. While the rest of the game saw either side create some interesting opportunities, City got close to getting an equalizer in the second half. They won a free kick just outside the semicircle of the 18-yard box.
Midfielder Yui Hasegawa took charge and struck a brilliant strike on goal, only to see Phallon make a flying save from her left hand to stop the goal. For a moment, it seemed the American star’s efforts were about to go down in vain as the ball reflected back toward one of the City players who was waiting inside the six-yard box to convert from the rebound. But talk about sheer determination; Tullis-Joyce fearlessly spread her body, with the ball somehow touching her leg to get saved for the second time.

All of those in City’s favor were left in disbelief, with even the players trying to recover from what happened. In the end, Tullis-Joyce’s efforts proved favorable, as she literally dropped a player of the match performance. In fact, the post-game saw the star goalie buzz over her display but more importantly on her team’s victory.
“It’s incredible,” Tullis-Joyce began. “Everyone had an absolutely stand-out performance that I’m just so proud and so happy for every one of them. They were so great today… I’m happy that I got to be there and be the foundation for my team.”
Even though United won the FA Cup last year, the New York City native wishes to be a key part in leading her side all the way to victory in Wembley again. “I think we have special with our team this year,” added the former OL Reign (Now Seattle Reign) star.
Clearly, the former Miami Hurricanes star is thrilled not just with her performance but also with the crucial win. United will now rally for the FA Cup in the final against Chelsea, the very same team they lost at this particular stage a couple of years ago. As for the fans, instead of crossing their fingers to see Phallon lift the cup, they are rather backing the goalie for another key thing.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Phallon Tullis-Joyce the best American goalkeeper, or does she need to prove more?
Have an interesting take?
Emma Hayes to eat her words over what she said about Phallon Tullis-Joyce?
Following this remarkable performance, ardent fans blasted the X to react to the 28-year-old’s remarkable saves. In fact, they rather shifted the topic towards her international career, urging head coach Emma Hayes to already give her the No. 1 spot in the USWNT.
Yesterday’s remarkable performance from Phallon Tullis-Joyce came just a week before she delivered a similar master class for the USWNT. Having earned her first start on April 5 in the first clash of the April camp against Brazil, she secured a clean sheet along with a 2-0 win. That only saw the ex-USMNT Stu Holden star ask a million-dollar question that every ardent fan has been asking Hayes:
“So Tullis-Joyce is the USWNT #1 going forward right?”
However, to recall, the post-match saw the former Chelsea boss send some mixed signals regarding Phallon’s performance. While she praised the goalie for doing a pretty “tremendous” job in defending set pieces while also keeping the ball out of the goal, Hayes urged her to eliminate the playing style she follows at Man Utd. But this fan thinks otherwise:
“Someone tell Emma Hayes that Phallon is light years ahead of any other American goalkeeper. She doesn’t need to work to change her style. Her style is the best on the planet.”
When it comes to filling big shoes, Tullis-Joyce has been doing just that for Manchester United for quite a while now. After club legend Mary Earps made her move to Paris Saint-Germain last year, speculation swirled around Bayern Munich’s Mala Grohs as her potential successor. But instead, the Red Devils put their trust in Tullis-Joyce — and she’s certainly lived up to it. Oh, and take note Hayes, as this fan says:
“Best goalkeeper on the planet….memo to Emma Hayes….😁😁😉”
Having successfully filled Mary Earps’ boots, is it safe to say that the USWNT’s search for Alyssa Naeher’s replacement also ends with Phallon? Well, this fan hopes it should, considering Hayes’ other goalie is rather enduring a tough time, having conceded three goals in the most recent NWSL fixture. Meanwhile, the six-foot Phallon has started 18 WSL matches, recording 12 clean sheets and conceding just 9 goals:

“Horrible timing for Casey Murphy to have a rough game today. It’s making Emma Hayes’ decision easier.”
Yet somehow, the USWNT boss still seems to have some doubts, having earlier pointed out for Tullis-Joyce that Manchester United typically avoids buildup play and prefers to go direct from back to front. However, according to Hayes, the next step for the goalkeeper is learning to handle pressure and execute short passes to help play out from the back — a trait Emma values in her goalkeepers, who she believes should be fully involved with the other ten players on the pitch. But again, this netizen would like to pardon:
“Emma Hayes must be sick in the head if she believes there is genuinely competition for that no.1 spot… forget all that woke “passing out the back” nonsense.”

This was just a glimpse of the reactions you saw across the X as many more are constantly making this similar request for Hayes. While it would be interesting to see whether Emma Hayes finally has her faith in Phallon Tullis-Joyce, tell us do you back the Manchester United star for the No. 1 role in the comments.
