Will Chelsea take their foot off the gas in the transfer market? The Blues continue to burn a hole in their pocket to pursue greatness in the domestic world. Just days ago, the club secured the record signature of Naomi Girma. But, it looks like the WSL side isn’t stopping as they eye another NWSL and USWNT star Sam Coffey.
The interest comes just a day before the deadline day in the January transfer window. Notably, the London-based club looks to bolster their ranks for one last time. This comes from BBC writer Emma Sanders, who reports Chelsea’s eyeing the market to sign a defensive midfielder for a long time. Hence, bringing Sam Coffey to Stamford Bridge seems quite intriguing to the WSL giants.
So far, talks haven’t progressed much with the Portland Thorns. However, Chelsea ladies contacted the 26-year-old American midfielder, who continues to train with the NWSL side in Arizona. Of course, it won’t come with a cheap transfer fee for the English side as Coffey signed a two-year contract with the NWSL side in 2022. Since then, Coffey has made quite a name for herself at the Thorns.

She remains a sensational player, mind you. Coffey earned a place in the NWSL Best XI for two consecutive years in 2022 and 2023. Moreover, the holding midfielder also endured luck on the international front. She earned her first international cap for the USWNT in 2022, debuting against Nigeria during a friendly game. Samantha could cement her name in the Stars and Stripes, earning a place in Emma Hayes’ 2024 Paris Olympics roster.
That became her first-ever international achievement, having won the gold medal in France. No wonder Chelsea are keen to bring the US international to England’s domestic scene. While it remains to see how the deal gets closed by the WSL leaders, it has made one thing clear; the NWSL is in danger!

WSL continues stealing NWSL stars for greater success!
Days ago, Chelsea broke the transfer record by signing Naomi Girma from San Diego Waves for a whopping $1 million. Since then, the trend hasn’t stopped for the NWSL stars being poached by the WSL sides. To begin with, clubs eyed Trinity Rodman as the latest to be linked with a move away from the States’ domestic landscape. That’s because she is in the final year of her contract with Washington Spirits.
Hence, top clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal, and others across Europe, are allegedly interested in signing the 22-year-old. While this rumor hasn’t settled well with many, there’s more worrying news. The latest from the transfer mill reports that USWNT and NJ/NY Gotham FC left-back Jenna Nighswonger could join Arsenal for $100,000.

Unfortunately, this is just a glimpse of what has surfaced so far. Numerous transfer rumors suggest the WSL remains eager to lure away NWSL stars. For ardent American fans, it must be difficult to watch these remarkable talents depart for rival leagues—after all, their presence makes the NWSL worth watching.

One thing is certain: the WSL is surely coming to contest and challenge the NWSL for the title of the best women’s league. Whether the American domestic tournament can prevent European giants from raiding its stars remains to be seen.
