Looks like Alyssa Thompson has unlocked the secret to success. The past couple of years have been nothing short of a disappointment, having received not more than 17 minutes of playing time during the 2023 World Cup while also being overlooked for the Paris Olympics squad by Emma Hayes. But talk about a redemption arc—not only has she been making her mark with the USWNT lately, but Thompson is now even outshining the likes of Trinity Rodman thanks to a unique NWSL milestone!
Yes, you heard that right. Since having found her footing on the international stage, the domestic journey has somehow naturally aspirated for the 20-year-old. Speaking of her feat, it came in the latest league fixture where Angel City traveled to Shell Energy Stadium to be hosted by Houston Dash. The away side managed to secure an easy 1-3 win thanks to a couple of early half-strikes from Macey Hodge, with Alyssa Thompson assisting the second to for Riley Tiernan before adding a third to overshadow Barbara Olivieri’s consolation.
While the goal certainly strengthened the ACFC forward’s case, it was her assist that truly stood out—making her the second-youngest player in league history to record 10 goals and 10 assists. She has managed to achieve this feat at the age of 20 years, 5 months, 5 days, giving her the right to push Trinity Rodman down the list as the Washington Spirit star achieved a similar feat at 20 years, 11 months, 17 days.

However, Thompson couldn’t pip the #1 spot which is currently being held by Portland Thorns attacker Olivia Moultrie at the age of 19 years, 6 months, 4 days. Then again, the highlight of this feat turns out to be the fact that the Angel City star was able to etch the record by piping a talented figure like Rodman.

That’s not all, while the 22-year-old is still trying to open her account this season, Alyssa seems to be vying for the top-scorer chart, just a goal deficit to Rodman’s fellow teammate Ashley Hatch’s tally of 4.
Notably, it wasn’t just this personal feat that Thompson was able to achieve. Her contribution has led Mark Parsons-led side secure another interesting record. Interestingly, all seven of Angel City’s goals in the 2025 NWSL season so far have come from players aged 23 or younger. Either way, it is quite an emphatic achievement for Thompson. If it stays this way, then expect Alyssa to remain a constant in the USWNT, even dismantling America’s favorite soccer trio.

Now, before you start bashing in the comments, hear us out for a minute. It’s true that it’s still too early to even bring up this debate. But honestly, the way things are going in favor of Alyssa Thomspon (touchwood alert), it’s only natural to start assuming that she will be a starter at the US Women’s National Team.
In the recently concluded camp where the American ladies won 2-0 but lost 1-2 against Brazil, Thompson remained fully active. In the first game, the California native was a constant threat throughout the 85 minutes she spent on the pitch, showcasing sharp dribbling skills and keeping the Brazilian defense on high alert. Her intent was clear right from the opening minutes. Within just five minutes, she collected a pass on the left wing and cut inside with a central dribble.

Spotting Trinity Rodman hovering near the box, the Angel City star slipped in a clever pass, perfectly setting up the Washington Spirit forward. The result? A goal for Rodman — marking her first strike for the USWNT since the Summer Games. Though it was unfortunate to see Thompson not being able to find the net, one shall admit that she has started making a connection with her teammates.

And the fact it came with someone like Rodman only suggests Emma Hayes and Co. would like to see more from them. Not to mention, Sophia Wilson is out of action for the time being after having announced her pregnancy. Meanwhile, Mallory Swanson has remained AWOL since the beginning of the season.
Whatever the case may be, it would be interesting to see what unfolds in the future.
