The battle between Mikaela Shiffrin and Petra Vlhova is not ending soon. Since the beginning of the FIS Ski World Cup, Mikaela’s number one position was under threat by the Beijing Olympic gold medalist Petra Vlhova. However, the US skier was able to defend her title successfully in the previous two races, but the struggle still remains.

In the giant slalom today, Slovakian skier Petra Vlhova emerged victorious while Mikaela finished the race at sixth position. This means there will be some reshuffling in the world cup standings once again.

Petra Vlhova reduces world cup points gap with Mikaela Shiffrin

After finishing second in the super-G and fourth in the giant slalom on Sunday, Mikaela Shiffrin had an overall lead of 117 points over her Slovakian rival Petra Vlhova. However, with today’s results, that lead has been reduced to 57 points, as Vlhova secured 100 points, while Mikaela only got 40 points for her sixth-place finish.

 

When everyone thought that the battle was over, Vlhova added some fuel to it with an incredible performance today.

Shiffrin talks about the ongoing world tension

Prior to her match today, Mikaela posted a heart-ripping message on her Instagram handle. Like everyone else, the Olympic champion is also disturbed by the turn of events in the Europe. Hence, she wrote, “How can I even care about ski racing at this point? How can anyone care about anything else?”

She further added, “I’ll wake up tomorrow bright-eyed about competing in one of the final races of the World Cup Season, knowing that in only a few weeks I’ll be returning home to family, friends, and ‘peace’. But it’s not peace, is it.”

Although the American skier is leading the world cup standing as of now, the game is still on.
