It takes great resilience to stand straight back after a traumatic incident, especially when it happens at a young age. At the age of 11, when a girl was skiing with her parent, little did she know that a single moment would change her life forever. It was an exhilarating day on the slopes until it all came crashing down.

Hannah Makmale, now 16, bravely recalls the heart-stopping day when her world took a chilling turn. With courage and determination, she has not only rebuilt her life but soared to new heights with remarkable achievements.

“I spent about two years in physical therapy to get fully back where I was before”

Hannah, in her recent interaction with NBC Connecticut courageously shared her story. Narrating about what exactly happened on that day, she said, “So I was kind of went full speed down the side of the trail. And eventually, my ski got caught on one side of a tree and it kind of whipped my hip around and my whole body.”

The road to recovery never went easy for her, “I spent about two years in physical therapy to get fully back where I was before, it was definitely a very lengthy process just getting me back to the strength I had before.” she added. It was mere dedication that kept the lion-hearted young skier dedicated and keeping faith in the process, keeping her inclined toward the positive side of the whole recovery journey. In fact, on the way, she picked up a new passion as well.

Second innings after the recovery

After her recovery, Hannah found herself hooked to rowing. It was a sport that not only showcased her newfound strength but also allowed her to lead through optimism, inspiring her team to victory. Hannah turned her life around and led her Saugatuck Rowing Club team to back-to-back national championships for 2nd time in a row.

Addressing rowing after her ski accident, Hannah said,

“And I would say that I picked it up really quickly and it was you know quickly became something that I was really invested in, and you know looked forward to doing it at the end of the day.” She went on reminiscing, “I remember crossing the finish line and feeling like you know everything I have gone through…”

Her story teaches us the value of unwavering determination and the incredible potential that lies within us all. Reminding everyone the importance of self-belief, Hannah says, “One of the most important things for people to remember if you are going through a similar experience to that is just to keep the faith, that’s one of the most important things to me.”
