Pharrell Williams is an American record producer who is highly credited for his contribution to popularizing skateboarding. In the early 2000s, when skateboarding wasn’t as popular as it is today, Pharrell included its reference in most of his works. From music and rap to his clothing line. During that era, he came to be widely known as Skateboard P.
Another legend who has made a great contribution to the sport is the 54-year-old American skateboarder, Tony Hawk. The owner of the Skateboard company Birdhouse was the pioneer of modern vertical skateboarding. Hawk has worked to spread the game even to impoverished places around the globe. Through his foundation, which is now known as The Skatepark Project, Hawk continues to set up skate parks in such areas.

Tony Hawk and Pharrell Williams on the ‘OTHERtone’
Tony Hawk joined Pharrell Williams on Apple’s radio show Atherton to discuss the evolution of skateboarding in society. During the broadcast, Williams talked about the immense growth the game has made over the years. He equated the number of members in the skateboarding community to that of the rappers. He said, “There are just as many skaters as there are rappers. And there’s a million rappers and there’s a million skaters and a million decks now.”
“I think it is so cool and I’m so happy to hear it and see it. You know it wasn’t that way when we were coming up,” Willams added. Hawk praised Williams for his contribution to the sport. He said, “Skateboard P, I give you so much credit for raising awareness, for bringing a whole new audience in and having them embrace it. Like I thank you for that.”
