Recently, the multi-sport Paralympic athlete added skateboarding to her list already extensive list. And she learned it from one of the sport’s legends, Tony Hawk.
Tony Hawk teaches Oksana Masters a new trick
Masters visited San Diego on July 22 to try her hand at skateboarding. Her partner Aaron Pike and her friends, including former professional skateboarder and radio personality Jason Ellis and MoSwo PR founder Katie Moses Swope, joined the athlete.
However, they were not the only ones present on the occasion as the skateboarding legend was also there. Although Hawk retired from the competitive aspect of the sport in 2003, he is still skateboarding. Moreover, he devotes a significant time to inventing new tricks.
During the time the athletes spent together, Masters learned a few lessons from the Birdman. But the fascinating part is she honed a new trick on her second attempt. It was the kickturn, a move that involves a skateboarder making a turn on the skateboard after ascending a ramp to move back downwards.

After the skateboarding session, Swope posted on Instagram to narrate the day’s events. It was a carousel post containing snippets of Masters performing the trick with ease. Moreover, the pictures signify the fun session enjoyed by the athletes.
And the caption read, “And today? We ended up in San Diego, and thanks to my friend @tonyhawk we may have added another sport to @oksanamasters growing list. Watching Oksana taught by the best to skateboard where she mastered her first kickturn on the second try might be forever a favorite experience…or tied with her first ramp slide.”
Is the trick difficult to learn?
Pros and fans of the sport consider the kickturn a basic skateboarding trick. However, it is still a difficult move to master on the same day, let alone on the second try itself. But Masters is an elite cross-country skier, and she has the hardware to show for it. The Paralympian has one gold and three silvers in cross-country skiing.

And even though she possesses a superior balance than the average joe in similar sports, it is still a difficult move. It requires tremendous skills and willpower to attain proficiency on the second try. But it is what it is, and she mastered the trick in the shortest of time.
