A newly opened skating park will be named to honor a teen boy. Located near Catawba St. in Belmont, the skating park of Belmont will be named after a young aspiring skater, Trever Young, who was killed in an accident. The boy who died so young will now forever remain a part of the city.
After a year’s delay in construction, the skating Park was opened last year in the fall behind the Belmont Recreation Center. The skate park was made after a lot of demands throughout the decade since Trevor Young’s accident and will be named after him through unanimous approval on July 10.

In 2005, Trevor Young, a 13-year-old teenager studying at Belmont High, was riding his skateboard when a car crashed into him and killed him. To honor the young boy’s memory, the Parks and Recreation Department has decided to name the new skate park after him. A newly designed park sign will also be added to the skate park. In an interview with the Gaston Gazette, councilman Richard Turner, talking about naming the park, stated, “We always intended on giving it some sort of name; naming it for Trevor Gray… seemed like the best option.” Further, while stating the timings of the skate park, the councilman told the media that the finances, timing, location, and everything came together smoothly and on time.
Besides Trevor, the park board will also honor another soul who lost his life while saving Trevor. Police officer Byron Carpenter, who was on his way to help Trevor pass away, will be remembered by adding a memorial Plaque at one of the benches of the skate park by the park community. According to one of the members of the board, they already have the benches ready for the park but need to bring in $200 more to add the honor plaque to one of the benches. This skatepark was built on a $400,000 budget and comes with a beginner area.
