A group of American skeet shooters came together to create a stir in the athletic world yesterday. With masters in a range of disciplines, US athletes have been making waves this year in all sports. A mix of young and seasoned athletes who complement each other made headlines in the treasured sport of shooting. The first athlete has a military background in the United States Army, whereas the second one achieved victory over the top-ranked Amber Hill at the 2021 ISSF World Cup. Interestingly, besides their mutual passion for shooting, they also began competing when they were just teens.

As the international championships went underway this month, the US Shooting team simply outperformed standing at the top of the podium. For two shooters who had only ever known to add gold to their strong portfolios, coming together meant a clear result for the team, a gold medal. Shooting Icons repeat their win history

Sensei Vincent Hancock and prodigy Austen Smith won a gold medal at the 2023 International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Championships. It all happened in Azerbaijan this Sunday when Hancock and Smith earned a perfect score of 149/150 in the Mixed Skeet Team competition. Not simply a near-full score the American duo set a new world record in mixed skeet shooting earning gold medals reported the USA Shooting.

The world championship triumph for Smith who won the women’s skeet gold medal last year and her coach Hancock, it’s the second international gold this year. The team won the Mixed Skeet Team event earlier at the 2023 ISSF London World Cup in July, beating Chile. Repeating their gold victory they outshot the Ukrainian team in Azerbaijan this time. This fall in Santiago, Chile, the winning duo will compete in the 2023 Pan American Games in hopes of a gold hat trick.

The silver medalists from last year’s men’s skeet team Christian Elliott and Dustan Taylor joined Hancock on the winning stand this year. The US men’s team also won a gold medal after surpassing Greece in the men’s skeet having a score of 369/375. Team USA is currently ranked only second in the medal standings, behind China in the ISSF World Championship. However, it’s noteworthy how the total score of the US team in the Championship was significantly influenced by the women’s team.

Women’s shooting update from the 2023 World Championship

The 8X medalist at the ISSF World Cup, Dania Vizzi, competed opposite her American teammate Austen Smith after qualifying in the first round with a similar score of 122/125. After winning the quarter and then finals, Vizzi went against Slovakian shooter Danka Bartekova to win the World Championship title. Only after 11 shots, Bartekova took home her gold medal in the event while Vizzi secured a silver medal.

Samantha Simonton, who won the silver medal in the ISSF Women’s Skeet this year, ranked among the top six. Simonton outperformed Smith, who finished sixth overall and came in fourth. In addition, the Women’s Skeet Team, which consisted of Vizzi, Smith, and Simonton, was awarded a gold medal for their combined performance in the qualification round. Just like the mixed record, the women’s team also surpassed the previous records for the Women’s Skeet Team with a score of 365 out of 375. With the individual and mixed scores, it is evident that the American team proved dominant in winning the top position in the world championship.
