The shark terror struck the shores of Australia as a young man suffered a brutal attack on December 8. The scuba diving enthusiast was on a holiday in Queensland when the attack occurred. While his leg was being mauled by the shark, the footage of the entire episode got caught on his camera.

Matteo Mariotti, thinking he was in his final moments, retrieved his camera at the 1770 Beach in Queensland, Australia, as he feared the shark might strike again. A social media post showcased the footage caught on his GoPro camera, wherein the Italian fought for his life.

Matteo Mariotti, who has been pursuing a degree in marine biology in Australia since the latter part of last year, was attacked on the left side and lost most of his right leg. Mariotti could be heard crying in fear and shock during the shark attack as the camera kept bobbing in and out of the water. “I beg you to help me,” he said to his friend as he approached the beach.

The Italian student thought that he would not survive the attack. The shark attack happened when Mariotti was snorkeling along the coast. As he swam towards the shore, his clothes ripped and the water red with blood, he recorded himself using what seemed to be a GoPro camera. While the video footage is pretty scary on its own, Mariotti’s words in an interview chill the spine even further.

A miraculous escape from death

While it may seem that Mariotti already had his camera on during the shark attack, the truth is the opposite. The marine biology student had posted the video on his personal Instagram account as well. Mariotti captioned the video with the words, “I started this video a few moments after the last bite, I wanted to say goodbye, I never thought I’d survive that monster.”

The Italian student had almost surrendered himself, and is, unfortunately, just 20 years old. However, a stroke of silver lining amidst these dark clouds saved his life. Mariotti said that the brutal shark attack didn’t result in his demise, as his snorkeling fin got stuck in the shark’s mouth. This prevented the shark from causing any further damage, leaving the 20-year-old battered, but alive.
