A hometown hero with a passion for rodeo is returning to Northeastern Oregon. With his roots running deep in the rugged terrain of Northeast Oregon, Walla Walla’s very own Derek Kolbaba sets his sights on Chief Joseph Days. As a native of Joseph, the famed bull rider is ready to take center stage in front of a home crowd that will be cheering for the local hero.

With Chief Joseph Days scheduled from 26-29 July, Kolbaba will be gearing up for an electrifying showdown. Kolbaba is a fourth-generation cowboy and is the great-grandson of the pioneer who started the event, in which he will be competing.

Although Kolbaba moved to Walla Walla during his third-grade years, he has since become a seasoned veteran in the professional rodeo circuit. More recently, he had an impressive NFR Open in Colorado Springs. At the NFR Open, he claimed seventh place with a remarkable score of 79. For 67 years, Chief Joseph Days has been an iconic event, and the local lad is ready to go out in the arena. This rodeo extravaganza is more than just a competition. It’s a celebration of heritage and a tribute to legendary stock contractor Harley Tucker, Derek Kolbaba’s great-grandfather, who started Chief Joseph Days, back in 1946.

Kolbaba will be returning to the Harley Tucker Memorial Arena, an arena named in his great-grandfather’s honor. The bull rider feels a special connection to his family’s legacy as he prepares to face fierce bulls in the heart of his hometown. According to a Union-Bulletin report, Kolbaba said, “It’s always neat riding in an arena named after my great grandad.” Chief Joseph Days has come a long way, transforming a modest outpost of 1,000 residents into a vibrant community of nearly 10,000 during this thrilling event. Looking back at the 2023 Professional Bull Riders World Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, in May, Kolbaba’s performance was nothing short of extraordinary.
