In the rodeo community, the Cowboy Breakfast Foundation Board of Directors recently announced the discontinuation of its annual breakfast event due to surging food costs. In a statement, the board expressed regret for ceasing the beloved community tradition, citing the prohibitive expenses of organizing the free breakfast. Despite this decision, the volunteer-driven breakfast has made significant contributions. It generated upwards of $250,000 in funds allocated to scholarships, supporting 159 students enrolled in the Culinary Arts program at St. Philip’s College. Furthermore, the event contributed by serving over a million tacos to the local community.

In a bid to continue supporting these initiatives, the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has stepped in to take over the tradition. This marks the event’s return after a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, it is an official rodeo event for the first time.

2024 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo launches with debut cowboy breakfast

The 2024 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo will kick off with the official Cowboy Breakfast. This marks the event’s debut as an official rodeo tradition. The breakfast is scheduled from 5-10 a.m. on Jan. 26 at 142 Gembler Road. This inaugural celebration is part of the 75th Anniversary Stock Show & Rodeo. Chris Derby, the chief marketing officer for the San Antonio Rodeo, expressed excitement. He is thrilled about activating the official rodeo cowboy breakfast to commence the festivities.

This complimentary event will provide attendees with a delightful morning experience featuring complimentary breakfast tacos, coffee, and non-alcoholic beverages. The Cowboy Breakfast will also mark the beginning of the Rodeo BBQ Cookoff, coinciding with the same weekend. The main event, the 2024 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, is set to take place from February 8 to 25 at the Frost Bank Center/Freeman Coliseum fairgrounds.

From 2020’s success to 2023’s farewell

The foundation’s last full-scale Cowboy Breakfast occurred in 2020, just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. During 2021 and 2022, the foundation adjusted its strategy by providing breakfast to designated organizations instead of hosting a sizable public gathering. Unfortunately, there was no event held in the year 2023.  The Cowboy Breakfast, renowned for serving over a million tacos garnered appreciation in the foundation’s announcement.
