The name “Petco Park” continues to evoke frivolous excitement among fans to this day. The annual rodeo event kicked off this Friday in San Diego amidst major controversies, but fans flocked to the stands, nonetheless. However, it looks like critical claims against the event were not entirely unfounded as one four-legged equine star met with an unfortunate incident on the same day.
While the Salem Stampede Rodeo concluded with record-breaking crowds, the San Diego show enthralled fans with another gasp-worthy moment during the indigenous relay race event, albeit with an occupational hazard. This event seeks to honor the Native American traditions, but the unprecedented scenario left onlookers horrified.

During the indigenous relay event, a 6-year-old Waco Kid crashed into a fence after throwing off his rider. While the organizers sought to fend off the animal groups claiming the inherent dangers of the sport, it looks like even the Petco Park officials were caught off-guard by the bizarre incident. As per a report by nbcsandiego.com, the horse was rushed out of the arena to the San Diego Rodeo, where a team of vets took charge of the situation.
Hours after the livestock ambulance took Waco Kid out of the park, the livestock welfare director at San Diego Rodeo Jed Pugsley assured fans about the stable condition of the mare. “Initial exam performed by the veterinarian team did not reveal any obvious signs of fracture or instability“, reported Pugsley via a press statement on Saturday. While the horse suffered a critical injury, his rider seemed to have better luck at keeping his head above the waters.
Despite being thrown off his ride unexpectedly, the rider suffered only minor bruises, as stated by Pugsley. On the following day of the mishap, Waco Kid was returned to his owners, who are a “multi-generation indigenous relay racing family” of the MHA Nation. The Vigen family hopes that Waco Kid will overcome the recent traumatic experience and get back on track soon.
