The WCRA (World Champions Rodeo Alliance), in partnership with Rodeo Corpus Christi, has increased the prize money on offer. Another athlete is now in contention to claim the Triple Crown of Rodeo (TCR) and the accompanying bonus. A former winner at Corpus Christi, the athlete in question, could wrap up the Triple Crown before returning to the city next year.
Rodeo Corpus Christi takes place during the local Buccaneer Days Festival. The Buc Days Festival begins on 30 April and ends on May 9 annually. When introduced to the TCR in 2021, the event featured prize money of around $500,000. The addition of the Division Youth (DY) Showcase will increase the payout even further.

As revealed by Professional Bull Riders (PBR), the 2024 edition of Rodeo Corpus Christi will feature prize money of at least $600,000. In addition, the lineup of events scheduled for 7 to 11 May will include the CEAT Specialty Tires DY Rodeo Showcase. The payout for the event is $545,000. Aside from that, over $55,000 will be paid to DY athletes at the inaugural Youth Showcase at that venue.
Winning the Triple Crown of Rodeo guarantees a $1 million bonus for athletes or teams. The athlete or group must win three consecutive major WCRA Rodeos, which can extend across calendar years. Only one has achieved that so far in RC Landingham on 17 December 2022. He became just the third to be in contention for the Triple Crown and the first to claim the bonus.

Landingham’s win is even more impressive in view of the obstacles in his path. Multiple injuries, courtesy of bull riding, a car wreck, and a fall off a horse, dogged him for a lengthy while. Aside from that, he lost his mother to ovarian cancer, which had also claimed his maternal grandmother. Isaac Diaz is currently best placed to replicate Landingham’s achievement. Diaz, a saddle bronc rider, won the Rodeo Corpus Christi and the Cowton Christmas Championship Rodeo.

Next on the calendar is the 2023 Rodeo Carolina. That will be the final TCR event of the year. The Tryon International Equestrian Center and Resort will play host to that event from 5 to 8 October. The next season will be kicked off with the WCRA 2024 Stampede at the E. The Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma will play host to that event from 4 to 7 January. It will mark the first stop of the Triple Crown Rodeo in Guthrie in over three years.

Whether Diaz can pull off a Triple Crown win before returning to the scene of an earlier victory is anyone’s guess. All eyes will be on the Texan in North Carolina come October. The stage is set for the 37-year-old to write his name in the history books beside Landingham.
