Rodeo, initially as entertainment and eventually as a sport, traces its origins back to the 1800s. What started as a means of fun and money rose to find itself woven into the traditions of communities to last through centuries. This factor has allowed the industry to attain considerable growth in the States despite its limited recognition. However, rodeo stands to hold two perspectives with all of its dangers and practices.

Valued at around hundreds of millions of dollars, rodeo has seen a visible spike in numbers. As per Cowboy Channel, there was a 51% increase in viewership in 2023 as compared to the previous year. However, with the evolving attitudes, varying temperaments and notions, rodeo is likely to encounter challenges.

One of the first challenges that threatens the industry with a growing mindset is the attitude towards the animals. The involvement of sporting rules and training is known to cause physical and psychological distress to the animals involved. Some further stand in opposition due to unkind regulations such as 24-hour confinement permits by the PRCA during transportation. The factors have thus evoked a response from animal protection groups who argue that rodeos exploit animals’ reactions to pain, fear, and stress.

The risk of an injury inflicted upon cowboys and girls further the concern for the community. According to reports, rodeo participants have an 89% chance of being injured each season, which is double the injury rate for college football players. Concussions, head/face trauma, shoulder, and knee injuries frame the common types of dangers faced by the participants. However, the deeply instilled traditions have pushed the sport forward, disarming the negative attitude alleged towards animals.

A tradition woven deep

One way the rodeo can keep the cowboy spirit alive is through the passing of traditions that the Western communities have borne through centuries. According to National Geographic, ‘ the sport is a way to sustain community culture and to stimulate economic activity’. It is also known to be the official state sport of Wyoming, South Dakota, and Texas. For these states and the families, rodeo is part of their lifestyle. A case study provided by NatGeo excellently explains how the sport remained and evolved through the family. Be it a pandemic or lack of funds, the family heritage lived on as the communities gathered and tribes sponsored.

Additionally, rodeo organizations’ involvement in lending awareness through lessons and more could back the support. One such project in existence is the WPRA. The organization is said to have put a lot of time and money into promoting the growth of the industry through junior programs. More such rodeos at the grassroots level can flame the right spark with the right attitude for cowboys heading forward.
